Group Tahi and Rua: Creating questions from what we have learnt

- Rainbow Maths - Numbers that make 10 and 100.
- Reversibility
- Splitting numbers
- Doubles
- Whats my number
- Snap it
- Karate Maths
- Spell a number
- Draw it (a given number)
- Show me a Maths pattern
- Draw a 3d shape

Group Tahi and Rua

Creating our questions we are trying to make them open questions for our group.

Ie changing 8 - 2= 6
To
If the answer is 6 what is the question?

Group Tahi and Rua

Getting excited.... Creating our own Maths inspired questions for our Easter hunt...

Can't wait to see our groups....

Creating a growth mindset in our Mathematic workshops:

The team wanted to create their own poster to include other characters- Alan wants to create a Harry Potter Poster. What will you create?

Please send your poster to

Revising what we learnt last week-

Algebra- what does x stand for

Group Rua: making our own 🌈 Maths

Group Rua: rainbow Maths 🌈

Finding the patterns when adding to make 10 or our 'tidy' numbers.

We can see as the blue numbers increase or get bigger by 1 the red numbers decrease or get smaller by 1.

We can see reversibility in action.
That 1 + 9 = 10
And
9 + 1 = 10

Well done team

Special interest intake 1: Exit tickets:

To leave our learning space each student must write what they have learnt since coming to this session. We will use these notes to build on for our next weeks session.

Well done team!! A fantastic first session with so many creative minds!

Special interest intake 1: dotty six

Working in partners to create the rules of a Maths game.

We need to look for patterns and see if our rules match the game we created.

Special Interest Intake 1: Sharing what we love about Maths

Brodie loves algebra, and shared her thinking. We worked hard to find out what x stood for.

We also learnt that if we put x beside the number it means multiplication. Ie 5x is the same as 5 x 'x'. Thank you for sharing your understandings and creating wonderful mathematical discussions.

Special Interest intake 1: number talks

Finding the most efficient strategy for adding 999 + 999 =
In our heads:

Do you agree our group has found the most efficient strategy? Are there other ways??

Group Toru: Continuing and creating the next pattern in the sequence.

The whole group was in the bottom of learning pit for this problem.  They were struggling with sense making and continuing the pattern - what was the pattern?

It is here our growth mindset is really tested!

We are now in the collaboration phase and working together so we can have a yeah ha moment together!!

Our teen and ty numbers: making sense of our numbers

Our learning environment: we have chairs we can move and rock on, and whiteboard tables we can write on.

Number Talks: Sharing all our learning about the number 18.

Group Rua:

Concentrating hard- using visual patterning to see how we can make 10. Through our word problem today.

"Ah, Maths has patterns, I like bright patterns."

"Maths is all about patterns, often with colour and shapes and sometimes with numbers."

Here we are trying to find all the combinations to make 10.

Group Wha: writing equivalent fractions

Group Wha: Fraction Inquiry:

What we have Learnt from last week:

2 quarters make one half
We know the top number is the numerator (how many parts you have) and the denominator (how many parts in the whole).

Equivalent  Fractions:
What makes a half?

In our number talks we clarified the different terms for takeaway.
  • Minus - take away, subtraction,
  • Holding numbers in our head.

Group Tahi: Our warm up today

Talking about and making the number 15 as a group.

Then we recorded all the ways we can write 18.

Lots of discussion- can you find anymore?

Tuesday 13 March 2018

Group Rua-

Making a game out of our place value materials.
Noticing our hundreds, tens and ones.

Blake wanted by to share his learning today:

Here Blake chose the empty number line to count backwards.
This is a great strategy to use for larger numbers. Thank you for sharing Blake.

Thank you for asking me to photograph your learning and sharing it on our blog!

Put on your "Maths Glasses" for your trips - What Mathematics is around you??

Please tell us what you see?

Thank you!

Have a wonderful trip Group Tahi

We hope you find lots of Maths all around?

Monday 12 March 2018

Group Rua: using base 10 blocks

Here we are using this piece of equipment to understand our numbers. That is called 'place value' we can see our numbers are made up of groups of 10.

Monday 5 March 2018

Group Toru: How is this shape growing?

Can you tell someone how this shape is growing?

Group Wha: fraction inquiry

Four children want to share two (square) waffles so that each child gets the same amount. How much of a waffle should each child get?

What we decided a rectangle is...

This is the definition the classes came up with.
Do you agree??

Would you add anything else?

We would love your feedback!

Group Rua: our family of facts

Hi Team,

Can you please talk about the different patterns you can see in these facts. Share these with your family.

Group Tahi: what’s my number

A fun way to understand our number system.
We are working on subtracting 5 from this three digit number and adding on 100 more.
