Group Kowhai - On our Maths Walk

This group shopped and cooked up nachos with their $10.  It smelt and looked so good Mrs Driver joined us.

Group Kakariki - Maths Outside the classroom

Today we bought fresh bread and cheese to make toasted sandwiches for our healthy snack.

It cost us $9 altogether, we were under budget by $1.

We enjoyed discussing all the Maths along the way.  Maths is everywhere!

Group Kikorangi: On our Maths Walk Today

Here we are at the The Boulevard Dairy, using our maths skills. We shopped for healthy ‘ish’ snacks, within our $10 budget and worked out the cost and the change.  We also looked and counted in odd and even numbers to the shops and timed the distance.

We put our Grain waves into an array to quickly count them all.  We can see 3 groups of 3 = 9 or 3 x 3 = 9

We now know Maths is Everywhere, not just in our classroom!!

Wednesday 5 December 2018

Going on our Maths Walk:

What can you see??

An Array of course - how can you quickly count the dots?

Kikorangi - Blue

We are learning about writing our own problems about our world.

We wrote problems about LOL dolls, as this interested a lot of our group.

Caprice's question she made up:

" If there are 7 layers in each LOL doll how many layers for 5 LOL dolls?

So it is 5 groups of 7 which is 35.

or we can say

7 groups of 5 which is 35

Today we noticed that it is easier to count in 5s so we can reverse our problem and still get the same answer.

Can you see the Patterns??

Maths is full of patterns, its our job to find them and use them to help us work out tricky problems.

3 + 7 = 10
30 + 70 = 100
300 + 700 = 1 000
3,000 + 7, 000 = 10, 000

What do you notice?? Can you continue the pattern? Please comment below.

Estimating the distance of our Giant Walk:

Today our school is walking to the local playground.  We are estimating how to measure the distance.

We learnt that 1000 of these rulers touching each other will make 1 kilometre.

Our estimates are:
106 m to 2 km - who will be closest??

Kikorangi: Colour Run Questions

Today we were inspired to create our own problems about the colour run:
Renee's Problem:
If 500 people were at the run and 134 people received spot prizes,  How many people missed out?

Renee split the 134 into 100 and 34.
Then went 500 - 100 = 400
400 - 34 = ?  400 - 30 = 370
370 - 4 = 366.

Renee could split the numbers and work out the answer was 366 people missed out.  In our group two people won spot prizes.

Group Kikorangi, Kakariki measurement activity:

Here we are using our measurement skills to measure non straight lines.

We enjoy working together and finding the difference between two numbers. We also used estimation and how to use standard and non standard measurement.

It is great to use our mathematics skills towards a practical activity.

Team 5: Kowhai

We are working on our fractions.  We have read a picture book all about finding the fraction of cookies Grandma baked.

We then made our fraction walls to see how numbers can be split into different ways.

We have matched a variety of equilivant fractions and worked out fraction of sets.

Now we are putting all our skills together to answer our challenge.
